About the California Cogs Band

The California Cogs band was formed in 2009 by veteran musicians who were members of San Diego area Rotary Clubs. The original mission was to perform at Rotary fund-raising events. But now, everyone enjoys The Cogs. Responding to a variety of requests, the band also entertains at community events and private parties, often to raise money for Rotary. and other community causes. "Cogs" refers to the famous Rotary International cog wheel emblem.


Dave Davis plays lead guitar and leads the band. He is a real estate appraiser and consultant, has been a guitar player for decades, and has played in rock bands since 1981. Dave is a member of Rotary Club of La Jolla Golden Triangle.

John Hawkins plays keyboards. A media consultant, John writes and speaks on business and technology, was a radio and TV personality and executive, and played in several bands. John is in Rotary Club of Rancho Bernardo, and formerly Rotary Club of La Jolla.

Dennis Bucko plays rhythm guitar and harmonica, and sings. He is an MD and plastic surgeon, and has performed with a variety of bands. Dennis is in Rotary Club of La Jolla Golden Triangle.

Ron Kohl plays drums. He has played percussion for decades, and also performs in a church praise band. Ron is a member and former president of Rotary Club of La Jolla Golden Triangle.

Joyce McHugh sings with The Cogs and has been lead singer in many professional bands.

Scott Wood plays rhythm guitar and sings. Scott has been performing music for many years. His Rotary connection is La Jolla Golden Triangle.

Rebecca Newlin sings. She is also an actor in a variety of productions. Rebecca's Rotary connection is Rotary Club of Camp Pendelton. She had a career with United Airlines and has written an insider book on her experiences.

Cogs band members emeritus include Emmett Brown, JoJo Ito, Linda Stouffer, and Richard Tilles.
